Intoxicated Minds Front Cover Reveal...

Wow. I genuinely can't believe that I'm getting the opportunity to write, and publish this post for you today. This has been a dream of mine for many years, and now it's finally time to show, and tell the world - eeeek!

The image above is the front cover design for my debut poetry collection 'Intoxicated Minds', which will be available to purchase worldwide from March 2nd 2019 (aka my 18th birthday - woo!)

I announced my plans to write a book in this post that I published back in January, and I've received so much love, and support since then, which hasn't gone unappreciated - I can assure you of that.

I wrote my first poem at the age of 12, when I was asked to do so in a Citizenship lesson. For those of you who may not know what Citizenship is, it was something that was compulsory in my school from Year 7-11, and it essentially looks at politics, the media, morals and values, and topics like that. I found it quite interesting, and relevant, and it was one of those GCSE's that as fairly straight-forward regarding the content, so I did actually get an A in the end. The poem that I produced was the one titled 'Abandoned Aged 6', and it can be found in the 2nd chapter of this collection.

The title 'Intoxicated Minds' was chosen for a couple of different reasons. It took me an absolute age to come up with the perfect name, but as soon as this one clicked in my head, it just all made sense. In my opinion, 'intoxicated' means overthinking, dealing with the madness of growing up, feeling out of control, or being brainwashed by societals standards and expectations and 'minds' is a collective term for teenagers and young people/humans as a whole, because the poetry focuses primarily on thoughts, experiences, and emotions. This also links in with the chapter choices, hence why they all begin with an e:

  • Enlighten focuses on heartbreak, learning from past experiences, being realistic about situations you're in, finding strength, and knowing your own self-worth.
  • Empathise is all about the darker, taboo topics, like trauma, my Father's alcoholism, feeling unappreciated, and mental health.
  • Encourage looks at the idea of addictions, suicidal thoughts, self-discovery, self-love/healing, faith and positivity.
  • Experience talks about different experiences that I've had (obviously!), like the holiday romance I had when I was 11, feeling competition with another girl over a boy, anxious thoughts, my first love, the death of a beloved internet friend Emma, my upbringing, and my sexual assault story.
I have been writing these poems over the last 5 years, and they contain all of my private thoughts and emotions. To release this book, I'm having to allow myself to be vulnerable, and potentially open to criticism - but, I do believe that I'm ready for the world to know who I am, and what I've been through. It's my time to shine.

All that's left to say for now is thank you so much to Sarah Docker for creating the most beautiful exterior, based on my original idea, and thank you to Leaf Publishing House (particularly the founder Adil) for proofreading, editing, and helping to put together the interior of my book. All 4 of the illustrators: Amy, Laurel, Laura and Daisy have been beyond incredible to work with.

As soon as 'Intoxicated Minds' is available to pre-order during some point in December, all of you will be the first to know.

Love and light always,
