10 Things I Love About Baking

Can you believe that The Great British Bake Off is back tonight for it's 7th series?! I have honestly been waiting for this day to come for the longest time, and now it's finally here, I don't think I can quite contain my excitement.
Don't get me wrong, I have always had some sort of connection with baking. Whether, or not, it's because I always used to bake cupcakes with my grandma, and help her out in the kitchen with preparation at Christmas time, I have no idea, but I definitely think that's influenced me in some way. I have watched previous series' of the show before, but I've always ended up getting distracted with other things, and missing episodes. However, this time, I'm making a promise to myself to watch, and tweet about every single episode! I know, I know. You're probably thinking, "Well, that's quite a big commitment you're making, Jade", but trust me, I really am going to stick to my word this time.
So anyway, onto the point of this post. I'm (obviously) going to be discussing 10 of the things that I love most about baking. I've really gotten into it these past few months, and particularly since I received my signed copy of Tanya Bakes in the post, so I've been getting a lot of use out of it, as you will have seen from recent posts. Now that TGBBO is starting tonight at 8pm, I thought to myself, what better way to commend the occasion than to do a blog post about it?! It made perfect sense to me in the early hours of this morning anyway!
Without further ado, let's just get on with 10 things..
1. Looking at all of the different recipes beforehand - This might sound like quite a weird one to start off with, but I always enjoy flicking through the pages of Tanya Bakes, admiring all of the delicious creations to see how they turn out. It always makes my mouth water, that's for sure! From desserts, to muffins, to tray bakes, there is always going to be countless masterpieces that you can choose from. In fact, the choosing is often the hardest part!
2. Dipping your finger into the bowl as you bake - Now, I know I probably shouldn't do this, as some may say it's unhygienic, and others may say that you'll end up with no mixture left in the end, but trust me, everyone does it at one point, or another! I just say that I'm making sure it tastes right before I carry on with the whole process. That's obviously a lie, but hey, no harm done! Well, that is, until I start feeling sick afterwards - oops! I also lick the bowl out when everything is in the oven, because, I mean, who doesn't do that?
3. Smelling the aroma from the kitchen as you walk in - Is there any better scent than a homemade bake hitting you as soon as you enter your kitchen? No, I didn't think so! Whether it's gingerbread, chocolate, vanilla sponge, or something else. I just love them all, and I can't ever get enough of them! I always peek into the oven to see if my bakes are rising, and ugh, it makes me so bloody excited to do the taste test after that!
4. Sticking your hands into the mixture - I completely get that not everyone in the world is a 'messy baker', but I think I am when I want to be! If you have to create that breadcrumb kind of texture, and you have to rub the mixture through your hands, then I'm all for it! Yeah, you may end up with ingredients all over your fingers, and you may have to scrub at them for about 6 years after, but that's all part of the fun!
5. Beating all of the ingredients together - Whether I use a mixing spoon, or a whisk, I love being able to beat all of the ingredients together to form a smoother texture. It's just one of these really satisfying feelings that you can't really explain, I guess?
6. Taking the first mouthful of your bake - Surely everyone, and their dog loves this part? When you have spent ages perfecting something, and then you finally get to taste it. Well, that's something pretty special, if you ask me!
7. Sharing the treats with your loved ones - Another self-explanatory one. I don't just bake for myself, but I also bake for those around me. I like being able to make things in quite large quantities, so that I'm able to let my friends, and family do the taste test too. Everyone's partial to a sweet treat every now, and then, so it's usually very rare that they will be able to resist the temptation.
8. Feeling that sense of pride - I'm the sort of person that likes feeling proud of myself. I like to know that I have done something, which is worth celebrating about. If I have baked something that has turned out really well, or similarly impressive to the original recipe, then I will immediately feel that sense of pride, and happiness. Baking is one of my main hobbies, and to know that you succeed at something you really love, and have a passion for. That's a feeling you can't describe, especially when other people agree with you.
9. Photographing the final results - Seeing as I follow Tanya on Twitter, I always like to take pictures if I make a bake from her book, because you never know if she's going to notice it, so it's worth a try! I like comparing the outcome to the one in the book, or other people's, to see what I could improve next time, or where I did particularly well. It's also nice to put up pictures, and show off your talents. There's no harm in it! Except, it may make quite a few hundred people hungry, but then they can just follow the recipe, and bake for themselves too!
10. Watching The Great British Bake Off - It's only fair that I added in this final point, don't you think? It's perfectly appropriate, after all! As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I haven't always been a religious watcher of TGBBO, but I'm making a much more conscious effort this time, so hopefully it will all go to plan, and I'll be able to up my baking game, as the series goes on! According to Twitter, I know I'm not the only one who's looking forward to it, which is always a bonus. Why don't we all tweet each other during each episode?!
That's it for today's post, folks! It's something a little bit different, so hopefully you liked reading it, even if you're not necessarily an avid baker yourself. I was thinking of making it into sort of like a mini series? I also want to do a mini series on photography, music, and blogging? Just some of the things that I love the most really! Is that something you would want?
What's your favourite thing to bake? Are you going to be watching The Great British Bake Off?
Lots of love always,
Jade xo
